What is LipiFlow®?
LipiFlow® is a new treatment option that helps stimulate your meibomian glands to treat the root cause of MGD dry eye. Performed right in your regular SightMD office and is a quick 15-minute procedure which helps to restore the natural balance of your tear film so you can start healthier tears all on your own.
How Does LipiFlow® Work?
LipiFlow is an automated, thermal pulsation system. After applying anesthetic eye drops, single-use applicators are placed above and below the eyelids. These applicators deliver gentle heat and massage to unblock clogged meibomian glands restoring function to these glands. Once function is restored they will start to produce the oil layer which is critical to stabilize your tears preventing rapid evaporation and dry eye.
Am I a Candidate?
As part of your dry eye evaluation, your physician will examine your eyelids. If there is evidence of Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD), we can use a special device called the LipiScan® which helps to determine the extent of meibomian gland blockage. We will review these images with you and discuss if you may be a good candidate for LipiFlow®.
Is LipiFlow® FDA Approved?
LipiFlow has been evaluated by the FDA and found to be safe for the treatment of dry eye from MGD. The only reported side effects are eye redness and stinging, which are mild and typically temporary in nature.
Does LipiFlow® Hurt?
LipiFlow is a painless procedure where an anesthetic drop is placed in the eye prior to fitting the activators. This ensures that you do not have any eye irritation during the treatment. Most patients actually enjoy the experience comparing it to a massage or “spa treatment” for your eyelids!
How Long Does Treatment Last?
Depending on the severity of your MGD, results of a LipiFlow procedure last from 6 months to 2 years. To maximize the effect of the treatment we encourage continued lid hygiene between treatments.
How Much Does LipiFlow® Cost?
The total cost of LipiFlow® can vary, so make sure you speak to your doctor to get all of the information.
Does my Health Insurance Cover LipiFlow?
Medical insurance does not cover the LipiFlow® procedure. Financing options are available to help pay for your treatment.
